A monk strap closes the shoe with a wide strap and buckle across the instep instead of laces. The single monk uses one strap; the double monk adds a second below it. The closure is the style's signature and also its fit device — the straps adjust the instep in a way a lace-up cannot, which is why the style holds a steady following once a wearer converts.
On the formality scale the monk sits deliberately between the derby and the loafer: dressed enough for tailored clothing, relaxed enough for denim. That middle position is why fashion-led brands keep the style in the range. A double monk in suede reads as a statement piece and carries a seasonal colorway; a single monk in smooth full-grain works as a daily alternate to the oxford.
